What is the True Gospel?

Writer: Maria KrajačićMaria Krajačić

The Gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. But to fully grasp this good news, we must first understand the bad news. Humanity, by nature, is sinful - separated from God, without any hope of redeeming itself. This reality goes back to the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 3:6 tells us that Eve saw the fruit as desirable, believing the devil’s lie over God’s truth. Sin entered the world, corrupting every part of man - his mind, emotions, and will. Romans 8:7 states that humanity, in its sinful nature, is hostile toward God and cannot seek Him on its own. This is the bad news: our sin has placed us under the judgment of God.

Yet, in His mercy, God provided a remedy. Jesus Christ, through His sacrifice on the cross, paid the penalty for our sins. Isaiah 53:5 proclaims, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Jesus bore God’s wrath so that we might have peace with God.

The essence of the Gospel is found in 1 Peter 2:24 and 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 - Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection on our behalf. As 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 declares, this is the message we must cling to, as it forms the very foundation of our faith. When Christ died, our old sinful nature died with Him. Romans 6:4-8 explains that just as Christ was raised to life, we too are raised into a new life, free from the bondage of sin. But this transformation is not something we accomplish by our own effort - it is the work of the Holy Spirit, whom Christ sent to dwell within us and renew us from within.

This is why the Gospel is not just another religious teaching; it is the very power of God for salvation, as Romans 1:16-17 affirms. It is not based on our own efforts, but entirely on God’s grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us that even the faith we have to believe in salvation is a gift from God, not something we can achieve by our own strength.

And what does this salvation mean for us? Romans 10:9 assures that if we confess Jesus as Lord and truly believe in His resurrection, we are saved - not merely from eternal separation from God, but given a completely new nature. 2 Corinthians 5:17 captures this transformation beautifully: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!" In Christ, we do not simply receive a second chance at life; we are made completely new, reshaped by His power and grace. We receive a changed heart, new desires, and a transformed will. These changes manifest in our lives as the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Because the Gospel brings real change, it is crucial that we hold fast to the truth. The Bible warns in Revelation 22:18-19 not to add or take away from God’s Word. The true Gospel is the only Gospel - the message of salvation through Christ alone. Any other gospel is false, leading people away from the life-changing power of God. We are called to believe in the Gospel, stand firm in its truth, and allow God’s power to transform us from the inside out.
