The God We’re Called to Know, Not See

If God is real, where is He? If He exists, why can’t I see Him? It’s a quiet wondering that many carry - sometimes whispered in prayer, sometimes buried beneath doubt.

We live in a world that values proof. We want what we can see, touch, and explain. But Jesus never fit into our categories - and maybe that’s exactly the point.

In John 17:3, Jesus says, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” He doesn’t say eternal life is found in seeing Him, but in knowing Him.

Throughout the Bible, even those closest to God didn’t see His face. Adam heard His voice in the garden, but never saw Him. Moses encountered a burning bush and received commandments from a cloud and fire - but never described God’s appearance. Even John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus, said, “I did not know Him…” until the Spirit revealed Him (John 1:33).

The prophets couldn’t sketch Him. The psalmists couldn’t paint Him. Because how do you draw mercy? How do you capture love? How do you reduce the Savior of the world to a human image?

And yet today, many settle for pictures - icons, paintings, digital renderings of a man we’ve never truly seen. But Jesus isn’t a face in a frame. He is Spirit. He is truth. He is the Word made flesh who dwelt among us - not to be admired on a wall, but to be known in our hearts.

Psalm 24:7 says, “Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.” Jesus enters where He is invited - not through sight, but through a willing heart.

So if you’re searching for Jesus, stop looking for an image. Start seeking a relationship. Don’t settle for a symbol. Ask Him to reveal Himself.

He may be invisible to the eyes - but He is undeniable to the soul.
