Have you ever paused to ask yourself, “What doors in my life have been left open?” It’s a question worth reflecting on, one that invites us to consider how the unseen influences in our lives shape our spiritual journey. Scripture gives us a vivid picture of our hearts as houses - designed to be filled with God’s Spirit. But when the doors of our hearts are left unguarded, they can become entry points for trouble, allowing sin and its consequences to take root.
In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus warns us about the danger of leaving our spiritual “houses” empty after being swept clean. A heart that remains unfilled is a vulnerable target. Small compromises, unchecked thoughts, or lingering bitterness - all seemingly insignificant - create space for unwanted influences to enter. Like cracks in a foundation, they weaken our spiritual defenses, making it easier for trouble to settle in.
Sin often sneaks in through the smallest cracks. It can look like unresolved anger, habits we have justified for too long, or neglecting time with God. These small decisions, each one seemingly harmless, leave the door of our hearts slightly open. As Proverbs 25:28 teaches, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.” Without vigilance, the enemy doesn’t need to knock - it simply walks in.
However, the good news is that it doesn’t have to stay that way. Jesus not only sets us free but equips us to remain free. In Matthew 21:12-13, He drives out what doesn’t belong in the temple, declaring it a house of prayer. Similarly, our hearts are designed to be dwelling places for God - filled with His Spirit, His peace, and His love, not confusion or pain.
To guard the doors of our hearts and close them to sin, we must first identify the areas in our lives that invite it. What cracks have been left open? Is it resentment? A habit we have justified for too long? Once we recognize these areas, we bring them to God, asking Him to guard our hearts and fill them with His presence. A heart filled with His Spirit leaves no room for sin to take hold.
Ask yourself: What doors in your life need to be closed? What cracks have been left open through compromise or fear? God doesn’t just tell us to clean the house but to fill it with His presence that brings true freedom and lasting peace.
When we surrender and invite God in, His Spirit fills every corner of our hearts. The doors we close to sin become doors we open to grace, freedom, and love. As the light pours in, the shadows retreat, and our hearts become strongholds of His presence. A heart filled with His Spirit is not only free - it is unshakably guarded by His love.
